Final design for Penticton child care centre head to council for approval

Penticton Western News - 5/2/2021

The final design for the Edmonton Avenue Childcare Centre in Penticton is heading to council for approval.

The design will be for a centre that provides 116 new childcare spaces, 16 per cent of the minimum of 722 that the city needs according to their Childcare Action Plan.

The construction of the facility will be funded through the Province of B.C. and Union of BC Municipalities in partnership with OneSky Community Resources, who will operate the facility.

The design includes energy efficiencies such as solar panels and solar-oriented windows to allow in natural light.

In response to public engagement, OneSky confirmed the current playground would continue to remain accessible to the public.

During the construction, the existing Little Triumphs child care facility will continue to be used. Plans beyond the opening of the Edmonton Avenue Childcare Centre for the old building once it reaches the end of its life in five years have not yet been finalized.

The nearby Safety Village will also continue to be accessible during construction, however the washroom building will be demolished due to its age.

The city and OneSky will be setting up temporary washrooms and storage for the Safety Village during the construction.

Construction is planned to begin July 1, if council approves the final plans, with the grand opening coming in September of 2022.
