Need to entertain family (or get away from them)? Check out what's going on in Sacramento

Dec. 22—For the upcoming week, most people will spend quality time with their family or loved ones traveling from different parts of the globe. With families coming from out of town, some may want to go out and find something to do in the Sacramento area, while others might need to find a place to get away from their family to for a few hours.

Whether it's just a solo mission or you have family tagging along, the weekly Black in Sac event list has some places you can go to hang out at during the holidays.

The Equity Lab at The Sacramento Bee would like to thank the Sacramento community for submitting events through our Google Form, email, as well as messaging and tagging us on social media.

Those electing to step out during the holiday season, remember to wear your mask, stay home if feeling sick, and always drink responsibly, refrain from drinking and driving while out. Here's a list of what's going on in Sacramento from Dec. 23 through Dec. 29.

Advisry Pop-Up

The third annual Advisry Pop Up charity event returning to Sacramento at 708 K Street.

The Sacramento-based fashion brand will have an archive sale and vintage customization during a two-day event Wednesday, from 11 a.m to 6 p.m., and Thursday, from noon to 7 p.m.

A percentage of the proceeds from the Advisry Pop Up will go to the Sacramento Food Bank.

A wide variety of Advisry merchandise will be available to purchase with special deals for the two-day sale.

Ceaze the Moment Christmas Toy Drive

Distribution day for the Christmas Toy Drive is coming up soon. The event is hosted by Ceaze The Moment, a nonprofit organization based in Oak Park.

Families, children, and the unhoused population will receive gifts passed out by Julius Douglas, founder of Ceaze the Moment. He will distribute toys to children from The Greens, located at 4331 Stockton Boulevard, starting at 10 a.m., on Thursday, Dec. 23.

Tiger

Tiger is open on Wednesday and Thursday from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. They will be closed for the holiday weekend. The lounge and bar is located at 722 K Street.

Come out, buy a drink and the holiday cup to go with it. Take a picture with their decorations before they come down.

Festivities at Tiger will resume next week as they prepare for the HOF Gala on New Year's Eve. Tickets are available for purchase, for more information visit Eventbrite.

Ugly Sweater Skate Party Toy Drive

DJ Daan will present an Ugly Sweater Skate Party and toy drive on Thursday, Dec. 23, from 9 p.m. to midnight, at Roller King Skating Center in Roseville.

Roller King is located at 889 Riverside Avenue.

Tickets are $15, before 10 p.m. Skate rentals are included in the ticket price. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

The event is also a toy drive, so skaters and other guests are encouraged to bring an unopened gift or toy for a child this holiday season. For every unopened toy, a raffle ticket will be awarded.

Eighty Eleven

Stop by Eighty-Eleven Bar and Grill, located at 8011 Florin Rd in Sacramento. This weekend, the doors will be open from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

On Friday, Christmas Eve, the theme is "The Night Before Christmas."

On Saturday, Christmas Day, they will have an Ugly Sweater Party which will feature a contest for a chance to win a 58-inch flat screen television.

Enjoy your football Sunday at Eighty Eleven with their gameday deal, "$7 Dollar Sundays," where guests can enjoy the Sunday NFL games with premium drinks for $7. It's free entry on Sunday.

Kwanzaa in Sacramento

Kwanzaa is a weeklong celebration, from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1, that reaffirms African heritage and African-American culture in the values of family, education, community responsibility, and self-improvement.

It was founded in the aftermath of the Watts riots by Maulana Karenga. In 1971, a free Saturday school called Shule Jumamose in Oak Park first held a Kwanzaa event in Sacramento.

The original Kwanzaa committee was composed of Shule Jumamose's founders Bertha Gaffney Gorman, Martha Tate-Glass (Reid), and the late Cheryl Fisher, Stan St. Amant and Byron Robertson.

Other community activists that included Tchaka Muhammed, Roy Willis, Ramona Armistead, Lujuan and the late Leslie Campbell and late Aisha Yetunde (Barbara Darden).

A core component of the school's philosophy was the importance of culture and history to the development of success of African American people.

Each day in Kwanzaa is based on the Nguzo Saba and focuses on the following seven guiding principles:

— Umoja meaning Unity.

— Kujichagulia meaning Self Determination

— Ujima meaning Collective Work and Responsibility

— Ujamaa meaning Cooperative Economics

— Nia meaning Purpose

— Kuumba meaning Creativity

— Faith meaning Imani

There will be an Umoja celebration at the California State Capitol on Sunday where families are invited to learn about opportunities to support the principles of Kwanzaa throughout the year.

Tickets are free, however the live event is $10. Register through the event's Eventbrite page.

The Greater Sacramento NAACP will celebrate 105 years of advocacy on Monday, Dec. 27 at the Golden One Center in a two hour luncheon and ceremony.

In collaboration with the Sacramento Kings, they will be celebrating Kwanzaa with presentations and guest speakers , from noon to 2 p.m.

Folsom's 2021 Kwanzaa celebration will be at Negro Bar State Historic Park, located at 1 Park Rd., on Tuesday.

There will be a ceremony from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. It costs $10 to park inside the park. Registration is available on Eventbrite.

Ujamaa Market Day is Wednesday at Florin Square, located at 2251 Florin Road.

The Ujamaa Market practices the fourth day of Kwanzaa, Ujamaa, or cooperative economics, as it brings together a variety of vendors from the Black business community. The event will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
