Needy Fund helps single mother keep her family afloat

Dec. 29—It's no secret that trying to find child care on the Cape and Islands is difficult. For a single parent, the obstacles become even greater.
Rising costs of housing and other living expenses have hit single-income homes the hardest. Additionally, most child care vouchers for those in low-income programs have long waiting lists and take a while to come in.
A young single mother in the Mid-Cape area was having trouble finding work amid the pandemic. On top of that, she was waiting on a child care voucher to help pay for her daughter's care so that she could be free to work.
After months of waiting, the young mother received a child care voucher, and was able to start work as a part-time assistant teacher. However, the income was not enough to cover the family's monthly bills.
That's when the young mother reached out to the Needy Fund, which was able to assist with her monthly utility bills. The Needy Fund also helped her connect with other resources and partner agencies.
With the support of the Needy Fund, the single mother has a better chance of flourishing in her new role as an assistant teacher and taking care of herself and her family.
More about the Needy Fund
Many human service agencies offer assistance to those in need, but the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund has been helping with a host of immediate, short-term emergencies such as food, rent, medical costs and other basic expenses since 1936.
No cash is given to Needy Fund recipients. Instead, the agency pays vendors through a voucher program. The case described above was provided by the Needy Fund on condition of anonymity.
Donations
Donations, which are tax deductible, may be made at needyfund.org. Checks also can be made payable to the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund and mailed to Cape Cod Times Needy Fund, P.O. Box 36, Hyannis, MA 02601.
