Needy Fund helps single mother battling cancer

Dec. 30—Education is one of the many job sectors experiencing staffing shortages. An online search showed there are many open positions for substitute teachers on the Cape and Islands.
Unfortunately, benefits for substitute teachers are not as good as those for full-time teachers — nor are substitute teachers paid as much.
A single mother was working as a substitute teacher on the Upper Cape when she was diagnosed with cancer. She also suffered a serious infection for which she was hospitalized.
Substitute teacher unable to work
She needed ongoing treatment, and was unable to keep working. To make things worse, she didn't qualify for disability, which made it difficult for her to make ends meet.
The struggling mother and her teenage daughter turned for help to the Needy Fund, which provided a safety net of human needs assistance and resources.
They assisted with transportation costs, which helped the mother get to her medical appointments. They helped with utilities, which kept the lights and heat on.
They also connected the family with partner agencies to help her and her daughter get through these difficult times.
More about the Needy Fund
Many human service agencies offer assistance to those in need, but the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund has been helping with a host of immediate, short-term emergencies such as food, rent, medical costs and other basic expenses since 1936.
No cash is given to Needy Fund recipients. Instead, the agency pays vendors through a voucher program. The case described above was provided by the Needy Fund on condition of anonymity.

Donations, which are tax deductible, may be made at needyfund.org. Checks also can be made payable to the Cape Cod Times
Needy Fund and mailed to Cape Cod Times Needy Fund, P.O. Box 36, Hyannis, MA 02601.
