El Paso Rhinos to auction kids-themed jerseys for Child Crisis Center of El Paso

El Paso Times - 1/13/2022

The El Paso Rhinos hockey team is kicking off 2022 with several home games in January, as well as a jersey auction to benefit the Child Crisis Center of El Paso.

On Friday and Saturday and Jan. 21-22, the Rhinos will play the Wichita Falls Warriors and the Corpus Christi Ice Rays, respectively. All three teams are within 5 points of each other in the North American Hockey League's South Division standings.

Throughout the series, the players will wear kid-themed jerseys designed by local artist Diego "Robot" Martinez. The jerseys will be auctioned off online at https://web.dashapp.io/auctions to benefit the Child Crisis Center of El Paso.

Martinez previously painted murals for the youths at the Child Crisis Center.

Along with several other artists, Martinez also donated several paintings to the center and he and another artist, Mario Ulloa, painted rooms to uplift the children.

The Child Crisis Center has received extra social media attention this month as the center is currently without a cook and the community has rallied with donations of prepared food for the children.

In a video on the center's Facebook page Tuesday, Enrique Davila, chief executive officer of the Child Crisis Center, thanked the community for donating restaurant meals.

"We'd have multiple messages, emails, and phone calls of people wanting to donate meals to the center," he said.

"The outpouring of love is just unbelievable," he added.

The Child Crisis Center is not short on food; however, the lack of a cook is a challenge during the pandemic, Davila said.

"We don't have staff to cook for our children. We want staff to focus on the children only and not have to worry about going into the kitchen and making meals or prepping meals and taking that attention from the children," he said.

The center can have anywhere from 10 to 20 children, depending on the day.

Davila said the center is short-staffed and could use more volunteers and more child-care specialists, in addition to a cook. For more information or to apply for a job, visit the Child Crisis Center of El Paso website at childcrisiscenterofelpaso.org.
