Red Lake Nation's Family and Children Services receives Circle of Excellence award

Jan. 14—RED LAKE — The Minnesota Department of Human Services awarded Red Lake Nation's Family and Children Services with a "Circle of Excellence" award in an online event Jan. 13.

Also known as Ombimindwaa Gidinawemaaganinaadog, or "Uplifting Our Relatives,"

was credited for exemplary work providing access to food, health care and other assistance relating to COVID-19.

"Intergenerational family wellness is the focus, including physical, emotional, spiritual, mental and cultural wellness for all family members in each hill of life — infancy, adolescence, adulthood and elderhood," a release said.

They were also recognized for transforming their approach to human services and adapting services to people with added emphasis on the Anishinaabe language, culture, traditions, beliefs and values.

Their services include family reunification and preservation, foster care and adult protection, waivered services and community-based mental health.

Minnesota Human Services Commissioner Jodi Harpstead presented the awards to honor organizations whose work supports the DHS mission to help people meet their basic needs so they can live in dignity and achieve their highest potential.
