EDITORIAL:HIGH NOTES: Funds for shooting victim's family, help for the poor, fishing flies for disabled vets

Apr. 23—In Schuylerville, friends and family raised money through a GoFundMe page to help offset the funeral expenses and other needs for the family of Kaylin Gillis, who was shot to death in Washington County on April 15. Gillis, 20, was in a vehicle with several friends when they got lost and pulled into the driveway of a home in Hebron. The homeowner fired a shotgun at the car, striking and killing Gillis. As of Sunday morning, the GoFundMe page had raised more than $144,000 toward a $140,000 goal. In Schenectady, the 518 Free Store has opened a storefront location on Liberty Street in Schenectady to allow it to better serve those affected by poverty. The 518 Free Store was started by Shalonda Faircloth in her home during the height of the pandemic in 2020 to help address the challenges of structural poverty and other hardships. According to its website, the program provides "equitable support of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, more) MaGes (marginalized genders) (transgender women and men, cisgender women, non-binary individuals) experiencing poverty in Schenectady." With the help of a $50,000 wellness grant, the organization opened a storefront at 435 Liberty St. that will allow it to expand its offerings to the community. In Colonie, the Capital District Fly Fishers recently held its fifth annual fly-tying marathon to help severely disabled veterans receive therapy through fly-fishing. The fly-tying event was held in February at the VFW Post 8692 in Colonie. All the flies were donated to Project Healing Waters, a national organization that takes severely disabled veterans fly fishing for therapy. To date, the Capital District Fly Fishers have donated over 16,000 flies to the organization. The Capital District Fly Fishers is an affiliate of Federation of Fly Fishers International.
