EKU Corbin Student Parent Services hosts Christmas event

Times-Tribune - 12/2/2023

Nov. 30—CORBIN — Eastern Kentucky University Corbin Student Parent Services held an event on Tuesday for parents to bring children to meet Santa and to learn about what EKU Corbin offers.

Santa Claus made a guest appearance — bringing great attendance, and many children were happy to get their chance to tell Santa what they wanted for Christmas.

Campus Director Trent Pool was also in attendance and made several comments on the future plans and current state of EKU Corbin.

"We hope to be expanding soon, in fact we are meetings and such to get input from industries in the area on what kinds of programs are most needed," he said.

EKU Corbin recently added Social Work to their catalog of bachelor's degrees able to be obtained at the branch. Social Work, according to Pool, is an area of particular need in the area — adding the program was essential.

Pool also extended his gratitude to the student body of EKU Corbin, stating that "we have a great student body that actively participates in campus activities...We're very thankful."

Program Coordinator of Center for Student Parents Michelle Anderson was also at the event. EKU and EKU Corbin have recently adopted a program designed to help single parents with the opportunity to earn a higher education, and therefore greater employment opportunities.

The program utilizes state and federal monies to help single parents who need financial and housing aid.

At the Richmond Campus, a Scholar House that hosts single-parent families recently opened and has seen much success.

Now at EKU Corbin, a similar structure is in the works.

According to Anderson, the building will have approximately 30 units. Each unit will contain 2 bedrooms, a living room, bathroom, and kitchen.

The program will also strive to provide single-parent families with resources that they need, whether it be transportation or internships in careers of interest.

The building will be constructed utilizing grants, volunteers, and land given by EKU. The timeline for its construction is approximately three years.
