Jan. 9 talk aims to help parents understand their kids' temptations

News-Sentinel - 1/2/2020

Jan. 2--"Parents just don't understand" is a common phrase, so First Presbyterian Church and the Fort Wayne Police Department are teaming up to shed some light on what is misunderstood to help parents understand the vaping epidemic, social media trends and how to keep children safe.

First Presbyterian's "Tough Talk" series kicks off Jan. 9 with Parent's Just Don't Understand, a serious conversation with Police Department about things parents just don't understand that are tempting youth. The event will include talk about the facts, what kids are doing, and what parents should focus on when it comes to the safety of their children.

Happy Hour begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by a presentation and talk at 6 p.m. by Sgt. Sofia Rosales-Scatena, FWPD public information officer. A question and answer period will follow.

"This is an informational meeting for parents and kids alike. This is meant to inform and to give parents enough information to engage their kids in conversation surrounding vaping and social media concerns. This is not intended to parent children, merely to encourage communication between parents and kids and to bring awareness to the growing issues both topics present," Rosales-Scatena said in a statement.

The event will be in the church theater, 300 W. Wayne St. Other 'Tough Talk' topics that will be had throughout the year include the genetic science of mental health, global warming, #metoo movement, and religion and politics.
