FCEDC to help with child care workforce training costs

The Garden City Telegram - 6/4/2020

May 28--The Finney County Economic Development Corporation will assist the Childcare and Early Learning Network in paying for its workers to complete their training before starting at the facility.

Lona DuVall, FCEDC president and CEO, informed the board of the intention at the regular monthly meeting Wednesday.

DuVall said the funds come from a budget item the FCEDC has set aside for several years to allow it to assist with small, workforce training related expenses.

Typically it's challenging for people to go through the child care training, DuVall said, but because of the COVID-19 situation, the Childcare Network has online access available for the training that all child care workers in Kansas have to complete prior to starting work at a child care facility.

"Because of the situation we've actually got this opportunity to do it online and the price is very, very low, they've got it down to about $20 per person to go through all of the hours of training that are necessary upfront," she said.

In other business:

--DuVall reported that the Childcare and Early Learning Network building is moving along and the Childcare Network's board went through the building at its prior meeting and board members were happy with what they saw.

--The FCEDC has entered into contract services with Haskell County for 40 hours of service to assist with developing housing projects, potential recruitment of retail businesses, etc.

--Webinars were hosted by the FCEDC, Finney County Area Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Vision and the Finney County Convention and Visitor's Bureau going through their resource guide about the reopening of the county.

--The FCEDC submitted a grant on behalf of Garden City Community College to allow for more essential skills training. The grant is designed for working with immigrants and refugees.
