Day care shut down after child turns on dryer with another kid inside, MI officials say

Charlotte Observer - 11/17/2021

A Detroit-area day care has been shut down after a child put another kid in a dryer and turned it on, and the owner of the day care did not notify the child’s parents, Michigan authorities said.

The woman’s license for the family child care home in Garden City has been suspended with the intent to revoke, according to a Nov. 16 news release from the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.

The child care owner brought the child — described as a “minor household member” — who put the young girl in the dryer to the hospital on Aug. 4, where the child received “mental health treatment,” according to the order of summary suspension

The woman who operated the day care out of her home is not being identified to protect the identity of the “minor household member.”

“It was critical to take emergency action to protect the health, welfare, and safety of the children at this family child care home,” the state agency said in the release.

The complaint said the woman exhibited a lack of appropriate care and supervision, as well as violations including a “household member’s suitability and conduciveness to the welfare of children,” and “failure to provide truthful and accurate information to the Department during an investigation.”

She told a nurse at the hospital she was “stressed out” because the child had put another child in the dryer, and the dryer had been turned on, according to the suspension summary from the agency.

The woman did not inform the child’s parents of the incident or the state’s Child Licensing Bureau, the summary said.

In September, the girl who had been put in the dryer told her mother about what had happened. She said the experience was “hot, and it was dark and hurt my back,” according to the summary.

The suspension summary says the household member child had been in the hospital for mental health treatment before and her “mental fitness” had not been disclosed to LARA and the juvenile had still been around other children.

The summary said the minor household member was “not suitable to meet the needs to children and does not act in a manner that is conducive to the welfare of children.”

Additionally, the day care owner is accused of lying to agency officials when confronted with the incident, saying it did not happen.

The summary said the owner did not provide the “appropriate care and supervision of children.”

Effective Nov. 3, the woman is no longer be able to own or operate another day care facility, or accept children for care in her home.

Garden City is 10 miles west from Detroit.
