Hand sanitizer distributed by Coral Gables company recalled for having 'toxic' methanol

Miami Herald - 9/6/2020

Sep. 6--A hand sanitizer distributed in Miami by a Coral Gables company was added to the FDA's Do Not Use list on Friday after being recalled on Thursday.

AJR Trading recalled lot No. 20DF8307 of bio aaa Advance Hand Sanitizer in 480 mL bottles, expiration date April, 2022, after the FDA said its testing found methanol. Methanol, also known as "wood alcohol," can be toxic if rubbed into the skin, according to the FDA.

This hand sanitizer can be returned to the store of purchase for a full refund. Report any problems to your medical professional, then the FDA online at their MedWatch Adverse Event page or call 800-332-1088.

Anyone with questions can email AJR Trading at ajrtrading15@gmail.com or call at 305-302-8416, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Eastern time.

Most hand sanitizers on the FDA's Do Not Use list got there by testing positive for methanol or reportedly being made in the same facility as a hand sanitizer with methanol.

This isn't the first recall of bio aaa Advance Hand Sanitizer in 480 mL bottles, which is made by AAA Cosmetica in Mexico. AAA recalled 22 lots of the hand sanitizer in July, but those were distributed by Fort Lauderdale company Payless Janitorial Corporation.

Also made by AAA Cosmetica on the FDA's Do Not Use list are QualitaMed Hand Sanitizer distributed by Homestead's QualitaMed Corp. and LumiSkin Advance Hand Sanitizer distributed by Weston's SoFlo Urban.
