6 more Kansas City metro residents die of COVID-19 as regional death toll nears 500

Sep. 16--An additional six residents have died of the coronavirus and another 182 have been infected in the Kansas City metro, public health officials reported Wednesday.

To date, the virus has infected 35,211 residents, killing 498, across the region that encompasses Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas.

Four additional deaths were reported in Wyandotte County, where the virus to date has infected 6,426 residents and killed 133.

An additional death in Kansas City brought the city's virus-related death toll to 100. There, the virus has infected 10,232 people, according to state data.

Johnson County continues to outpace other parts of the region in its total number of virus-related deaths, with 138. Health officials have reported 9,615 positive test results there.

In other parts of Jackson County, the virus has infected 6,695 people and killed 77 to date, according to state data.

An additional death was reported in Clay County, where there have been 1,657 cases and 40 deaths to date.

In Platte County, 586 people have been infected and 10 have died.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services' COVID-19 data for Jackson, Clay and Platte counties does not include the cases discovered within Kansas City's city limits.

Throughout Missouri, 106,587 residents have been infected by the virus, including 1,739 who have died.

In Kansas, there have been 50,870 infections, including 586 deaths.

Across the U.S., the virus has infected more than 6.6 million Americans, killing 196,349, according to Johns Hopkins University.
