COVID-19 outbreak: FAU season opener against Georgia Southern postponed

South Florida Sun Sentinel - 9/18/2020

FAU’s season opener against Georgia Southern, which was scheduled to be broadcasted on ESPN Saturday, has been postponed after the Owls' COVID-19 outbreak.

The program released a statement saying: “Following results of Thursday’s COVID-19 testing, it was determined the Owls would be unable to play Saturday. The two schools are working to find a date to play later this season.”

FAU coach Willie Taggart told reporters Wednesday that 11 members of the program tested positive for COVID-19 Monday, which led to the Owls canceling Tuesday’s practice.

Taggart didn’t say if all the positive tests were by players or if members of the staff tested positive too. Yahoo Sports Pete Thamel reported Friday morning that FAU received more positive tests Friday morning, including a “few” on-field and off-field staff members.
