New York puts R.I. back on travel quarantine list

Providence Journal - 9/22/2020

New York added Rhode Island to its travel advisory list Tuesday, meaning that people headed from Rhode Island to that state will have to quarantine for 14 days when arriving in New York.

The move comes as Rhode Island has seen upticks in the total number of new coronavirus cases -- fueled in part by a large outbreak among off-campus Providence College students.

New York, New Jersey and Connecticut work off the same list of states, although by 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, only New York had officially announced Rhode Island was back on its travel advisory list.

Rhode Island is already on Massachusetts' travel order. Massachusetts has a lower bar to be added to its travel order. People can travel to Massachusetts from a state on its travel ban list if they're negative for the coronavirus on a test within 72 hours of their arrival in Massachusetts.

Each state has its own rules and exemptions. When Rhode Island was previusly on Connecitcut's list, for example, Connecticut said people didn't have to quarantine if they were in Rhode Island for less than 24 hours, but still discouraged things like beach excursions. It also exempted travel into Connecticut from Rhode Island if people stayed in Connecticut for less than 24 hours. People headed to New York don't have to quarantine if they're just passing through Rhode Island.

There are also exemptions in states for work-related travel.
