COVID-19 cases continue to rise; more Moderna vaccine supply coming to El Paso County

El Paso public health officials reported 808 new cases of COVID-19 Saturday morning.

New cases continue to rise this week, totaling 2,997 since Monday, Jan. 4; there have been 102,899 positive cases reported in El Paso County since March.

Six new deaths were also reported Saturday morning; the total death count sits at 1,512.

The latest victims, all of whom had underlying health conditions, were two men in their 50s, a man in his 60s, a woman and two men in their 70s. The deaths occurred over a period of more than one month, officials said.

As of Saturday morning, health officials reported 420 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, including 174 in intensive care and 108 on ventilators.

Officials reported 19% of hospitalizations in El Paso County were COVID-19 related.

There are 34,856 active cases and 65,930 people have recovered from COVID-19 in El Paso.

More Moderna COVID-19 vaccine coming to El Paso, UMC

El Paso is set to receive 10,000 Moderna COVID-19 vaccines as part of a state program.

The City of El Paso will receive 5,000 vaccines, while University Medical Center will get another 5,000 doses the week of Jan. 11.

The state of Texas pilot program focuses on testing how the community will handle mass vaccination sites, El Paso Fire Chief Mario D’Agostino said.

More than 80,000 El Pasoans have registered for the vaccine, officials said. El Paso medical officials are only vaccinating people who fall within the first two groups eligible to receive the vaccine under Phase 1 of the state distribution guidelines.
