Coronavirus: 53 new deaths, 110 new cases in Orange County on March 7

Mar. 7—Fifty-three deaths were reported by Orange County public health officials on Sunday, March 7, raising the total number of COVID-19 fatalities to 4,226.

The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigations and can take weeks to process. The most recent death recorded was on Feb. 25.

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 110 new cases of the coronavirus on Sunday, increasing the cumulative total in the county to 247,751 cases since tracking began.

The county also reported 296 patients in local hospitals. There were 89 patients listed in intensive care units on Sunday, up two since the previous report. The hospital patient totals are about the same level as where they were in the middle of November. The peak for those hospitalized was Jan. 7, with 2,259 patients.

The California Department of Public Health vaccines dashboard shows that 847,532 vaccines doses have been distributed in Orange County as of March 6.

An estimated 2,866 cases of the virus have been recorded in Orange County in the last 14 days. The 14-day average of cases was 3,759 on Feb. 28.

The county update said 3,113,647 tests have been given for the coronavirus since testing began locally, with at least 8,917 new tests since the previous report.

Of the cumulative 4,226 deaths reported from the virus, 996 were skilled nursing facility residents, 473 were in assisted living facilities, one was an O.C. jail inmate and 10 were listed as homeless.

The county's breakdown of deaths by age is as follows:

* 85 and older: 32.56% (1,376, up 14)

* 75-84: 24.54% (1,037, up 21)

* 65-74: 19.31% (816, up 9)

* 55-64: 13.72% (580, up 4)

* 45-54: 6.44% (272, up 3)

* 35-44: 2.2% (93, up 2)

* 25-34: 0.99% (42)

* 18-24: 0.22% (9)

* 17 and younger: 0.02% (1)

It is estimated 236,312 people have recovered from the virus as of Sunday. The count of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.

Data posted each day is preliminary and subject to change, officials emphasize. More information may become available as individual case investigations are completed.
