COVID cases in Palm Beach County rise; rate of spread stays low

Palm Beach Post - 5/28/2021

With public health officials crossing their fingers hoping unvaccinated people wear masks over the long holiday weekend, there was a slight uptick in cases in Palm Beach County while state case counts held steady.

The 154 additional cases tallied in the county was the highest in six days, pushing the weekly total to 869. That is still the lowest seven-day total since Oct. 12.

Across the state, another 2,338 cases were reported, the same number as Thursday. Like the county, the 15,958 cases reported in the past week is the lowest in seven months.

The daily positivity rates, which indicate the prevalence of the virus and risk of infection, remained low.

The state rate dipped to 3.03%, lowering the 14-day average to 3.94%. It is the first time since at least May 2020 that the state’s average rate has been below 4%.

The county’s daily rate was 3.47%. It has averaged 3.23% over the past 14 days, mirroring levels recorded in October.

While vaccination rates are credited with reducing cases, just 18,955 people got shots in the county in the past week. That is the lowest number since a lull in early March before eligibility was expanded.

Statewide, an additional 297,119 people got at least one shot in the week ending Friday. That is the lowest number since late February.

To boost vaccination rates, mobile vans are to be in downtown Delray Beach and Lake Worth Beach during the weekend, offering shots to anyone over the age of 12. The van is to be at the oceanfront park in Lake Worth Beach on Saturday.
