CDC issues health notice about salmonella for people traveling to Mexico

Patriot-News - 9/20/2022

People traveling to Mexico anytime soon should consider a travel health notice that has been issued by the CDC regarding salmonella infections.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported some travelers who spent time in Mexico have become infected with “multi-drug resistant salmonella Newport.”

The CDC said the MDR salmonella “has developed the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them.” Infections, the agency said, “can be difficult to treat.”

The travelers who became sick, the CDC said, reported eating beef, cheese such as queso fresco and Oaxaca, beef jerky or dried beef (carne seca).

Salmonella bacteria can be found in a variety of foods, the CDC said. Symptoms of an infection include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. Those symptoms usually start between 6 hours and up to 6 days after swallowing the bacteria and last 4 to 7 days.

“Most people recover without antibiotics. However, some groups of people are more likely to get seriously ill and need antibiotic treatment. These groups include children younger than 12 months (especially those younger than 3 months), people with weakened immune systems, and people who are 65 years or older,” the CDC said.

To avoid becoming sick, the CDC recommends following “safe eating, drinking, cooking and food handling habits,” being aware that beef jerky and other dried beef products can make you sick if not prepared safely and washing your hands with soap and water before eating, before and after touching food and after using the toilet.

The CDC recommends travelers not eat foods that they do not know how they were prepared.

People should not eat beef that may be raw or undercooked, eat soft cheese made from raw or unpasteurized milk or eat food prepared by someone who is sick, the CDC said.
