Nov. 23--MERRILLVILLE -- An Ohio man was charged with the death of a 19-year-old Gary man who police say he shot during a botched robbery in 2011.

Desmon Sonny McQuay, 28, was arrested Wednesday by Dayton police following an investigation by the Merrillville FBI Gang Response Investigative Team. Officials said he is being held at the Montgomery County Jail in Ohio awaiting extradition to Indiana.

McQuay is accused of shooting Julian Nava to death inside the 19-year-old's Gary home in the 4200 block of West 22nd Avenue on March 18, 2011.

Officials said GRIT members began reinvestigating Nava's murder in 2019 after receiving new information. It is the seventh cold case in which the FBI task force has filed criminal charges since 2018.

"Julian was murdered in his own home during what we believe to be a botched daytime burglary committed by someone he knew whose intent was to steal electronic devices," said Hobart Police Detective Sgt. Nicholas Wardrip, a GRIT task force officer.

McQuay was charged Tuesday in the Lake County Superior Court with murder, battery by means of a deadly weapon, murder while committing or attempting to commit burglary, theft and burglary.

Police ask anyone with information on a cold case to call GRIT investigators at 219-942-4899.
