The Engen Electric Powered Prehension Orthosis, or EPPO, is a hand orthosis with a preassembled component system consisting of an aluminum forearm section attached to a radial forearm, connected by a wrist friction unit to a fiberglass hand section which stabilizes the thumb in stationary abduction. The stainless steel finger piece positions the index and middle fingers and is activated towards the thumb for 3 point prehension. Velcro straps secure the forearm, hand, and fingers. The unit has a rechargeable 6-volt DC microelectronic gear train assembly, contained in a cylindrical tube attached to the forearm section with a teflon extension that connects to and activates the finger piece. The control system is an on/off/hold butterfly switch which may be suitable for C 5-6 quadriplegics. The control site can be varied according to the user's motor function. POWER: Rechargeable batteries; charger included. SIZES: Available in custom sizes. Further adjustments may be necessary and should be done by a qualified orthotist.
