---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To design a prototype of a moving platform for pre-school aged children with mobility disabilities and/or lower limb disabilities to move around and navigate their environment. Created by designers at the Polytechnic University, Magic Carpet allows young children with mobility or lower limb disabilities to experience moving independently while learning and practicing the skills necessary for to maneuver a power wheelchair. The Magic Carpet consists of a carpeted platform on wheels with several types of controls, including single switches and a joystick, that allow the child to move it forward and backward, or to rotate the platform in a left or right direction. It has five speeds ranging from 0.4 kilometers per hour (kph) to 4 kph. The Magic Carpet also features an emergency stop button. Researchers developed the device with a number of different control options depending on whether the child is sitting upright or lying down on the platform. With help from a therapist, the child can learn each control process so he or she will eventually be able to use the Magic Carpet independently. Researchers continue to work on Magic Carpet, hoping to include line-tracing technology that ensures the device never moves outside of a prescribed area. CAPACITY: 90 kilograms. AUTHOR: Edwin Kee.
