---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To design a prototype of a robotic wheelchair that can climb over steps for individuals with mobility or lower extremity disabilities or spinal cord injury. A group of researchers from Chiba Institute of Technology led by Shuro Nakajima have designed a robot wheelchair that is capable of climbing over steps. The robot wheelchair has four-wheel drive and five axes to overcome a previously insurmountable obstacle for regular wheelchair users. The user navigates with a joystick, and the robot wheelchair automatically assesses the surrounding terrain to ensure that . If a user should end up on uneven ground, the robot controls the seat in order to maintain a level field. The robot relies on sensors on its feet to identify potential obstacles on the ground as well as determining the distance between steps. Currently, the working prototype is classified as a conceptual wheelchair but most of the motion has been configured.
