--- "DO IT YOURSELF" ENTRY ------- A head-switch mount which consists of a strip of expanded PVC that is formed so that it hooks around a head support. A Velcro strap connects the end of the head-switch mount. The switch is bolted to the mount.
PURPOSE: To stabilize a switch for activation by head movement.
MATERIALS USED: Expanded PVC material, 12 inch x 4 inch, Velcro loop tape (non-adhesive), 1 inch x 6 inch strip, Velcro pressure-sensitive hook tape, 1 inch x 4 inch strip, three ½ inch long bolts with matching nuts, a switch appropriate for head activation, such as an AbleNet Jelly Bean switch.
TOOLS: jigsaw, heat gun, scissors
PREPPARATION:
1.On the PVC material, trace the outline of the switch, and then draw 1 ¼ inch wide extensions from opposite sides of the tracing as follows: the extensions on one side can be approximately 1 ¾ inch long, and the extension on the other side needs to be long enough to wrap over the top of head support (perhaps 6 inches long).
2.Cut out the drawn shape on the PVC material using a jig saw.
3.Heat the PVC with a heat gun to bend it around the head support at the desired location, with the switch surface facing the back of the student’s head.
4.Attach the switch to the head mount using three ½ inch long bolts and nuts.
5.Attach pressure-sensitive Velcro hook to the ends of the extensions and add a Velcro loop strap to secure it to the head support.
