DO IT YOURSELF ENTRY --- PURPOSE: To create a do-it-yourself weighted blanket for a child with severe disabilities. The weighted blanket can be used for positioning and safety by preventing rolling and sliding. The weighted blanket is created out of two yards of fleece or lightweight cotton material (i.e. winter or summer weight) and six pounds of polly pellets. Polly pellets are recommended versus using dry beans or rice for filler as the blanket can be washed. To make the blanket, fold the two yards of material in half to make two layers. Put a seam on 3 sides and leave the top open. Next put a seam about every four inches, creating "tunnels" in the blanket. Measure the length to determine how many squares will be created (once the pellets are added, the seaming across should create 4 x 4 inch squares). Calculate how much of the polly pellets need to be added to each square, being careful to maintain the same amount per each square. Pour the amount for one square into each tunnel, shake it down to the end, and then sew a seam across. Be careful as this may damage a sewing machine needle if it hits a polly pellet. Repeat until the top of the blanket is reached and then sew a seam across the top. MATERIALS: 2 yards of fleece material, 6 pounds of polly pellets. TOOLS: Needle, thread, tape measure, scissors, and/or sewing machine. TITLE: Weighted Blanket. WEBSITE: Adaptions 4 Kidz. REF: http://adaptions4kidz.blogspot.com/2010/01/weighted-blanket.html.
