-- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To create a prototype of glasses that provide closed captioning and/or subtitles for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. For individuals who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, going to see a movie at the cinema can be difficult if the film is not already captioned. Sony UK has developed a pair of glasses that display subtitles in time with a given film. The device projects the subtitles onto the lens of the glasses giving the appearance that the subtitles are superimposed on the cinema screen. The glasses work without the user having to refocus between the captioning and the screen since the words appear to be on the screen itself. The glasses are expected to be available in UK movie theaters in 2012. There is no information currently available regarding adaptions for individuals who wear glasses and also have a hearing disability. AUTHOR: Adrian Covert.
