---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To design a prototype of a accessible tub that can pivot to facilitate tranfers in and out by individuals with lower extremity, balance or mobility disabilities or spinal cord injury. The Flume (seesaw) bathtub has a unique design based on principle of playground seesaws and slides while keeping the safety of individuals with mobility disabilities in mind. The Flume’s point of entry can be tilted downward so that it is easy for an individual to move his or her body from a wheelchair to the bathtub. Using the Flume bathtub is a four-step process. Initially the bathtub lies tilted towards the seat of the bathtub where the center of gravity is. The user maneuvers his or her wheelchair up to the tilted tub's edge and then places both feet into the tub. The user then grabs the steel grips on either side of the bathtub and slides into the bathtub's seat. The user can fill the bathtub with water using the faucet on the right side of the tub and as the tub begins to fill the tub gradually centers itself due to the weight of the water. When finished, the process of draining the water adjusts the center of gravity again so that the tub slowly begins to tilt back into its original position allowing the user to exit the bathtub. The tub drain is located near the bottom of the seat so the water can be removed regardless of the amount of tilt of the bathtub. TITLE: Seesaw Tub! WEBSITE: Yanko Design.
