The 1,000 Words to Sign is designed for deaf and hard of hearing individuals and their caregivers to teach them how to use American Sign Language as a form of communication. In 1,000 Words to Sign, signs are described in written words, and demonstrated in color pictures. To make the learning process complete, the book comes with an instructional DVD to demonstrate real-time signing, with the option to slow down the action to ensure absolute clarity.

It is divided into two sections: an introduction to ASL, followed by a vocabulary section. Arranged alphabetically, the vocabulary section is organized by common themes, including people, home, food, school, work, and nature. Each word is clearly illustrated with two to four photographs showing the beginning, middle, and end positions of the sign, with instructional arrows to indicate movement.
