What's Happening: Smoothie, energy drink store opens; Adult Halloween event set at winery; Veterans Day events

The Dispatch - 10/26/2020

Oct. 26--A new nutritional smoothie and energy drink bar has opened in Tyro; Weathervane Winey plans adult Halloween event; see which Veterans Day events are still happening or canceled. Here's what's happening in Davidson County.

'FUEL up' in Tyro

West Davidson residents have a new place to grab smoothies, energy drinks and herbal teas after FUEL Tyro opened in late August.

Miranda Legg, a 2015 West Davidson High School graduate, opened FUEL Tyro with Regan Abele, owner of BAM Nutrition of Lexington.

"We're excited to be here," Legg said. "We've seen a lot of growth since we opened."

In the future, once COVID-19 social distancing measures are no longer needed, Legg said the store would like to start an exercise work out group or a group that walks together at the West Davidson High School track.

Legg became familiar with the healthy smoothies and energy bar movement while working at BAM Nutrition during summer breaks from college. She said when she came home after teaching English for a year in Costa Rica, Abele reached out to her about partnering to open a store in the Tyro community, similar to BAM Nutrition in Lexington.

On its social media pages and in-store literature, the drinks are touted as healthy smoothies and energy drinks. Flavors range from chocolate and coffee flavors to a variety of fruit flavors. Legg said the store has 27 regular menu items, but also offers flavors of the month that typically coincide with the season or holidays.

Drinks range in price from $2 for tea to $12 for a combo of a smoothie and energy drink. The store is located at 4344 S. Highway 150, Lexington, in the Tyro community.

Halloween at Weathervane Winery

Weathervane Winery will host a Halloween event from 7-10 p.m.Oct. 30 which appeals more to adults than children.

The Wine-Down Friday Night Halloween style event will feature DJ Mark Tuttle and asks that attendees come dressed in costume, although it is not required. This is the winery's last Wine-Down event for 2020.

Zeko's food truck will be onsite to sell food. Admission is $5 per person. Weathervane Winery is located at 1452 Welcome-Arcadia Road, in the northern end of Davidson County.

Veterans Day events

The annual Veterans Day Commemoration and Wreath Laying Service at the Vietnam Memorial Park in Davidson County will take place Nov. 11.

However, Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center's Annual Communitywide Veterans Day Celebration has been canceled.

"Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 communitywide Veterans Day Celebration and Luncheon that has been hosted in the hospital lobby for area US military veterans and their families for more than 20 years, wrote Jon Applebaum, president and CEO Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center in a press release. "We sincerely thank all the men and women who have served, or are presently serving, our county through their military service .... For the safety and health of our veterans and community, it is essential that we all do our part to flatten the curve and stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus by not celebrating together this year. We appreciate your military service and hope we may celebrate together again next year."

The Novant Health event is held inside, while the N.C. Vietnam Memorial service is an outside event, so social distancing is easier to observe.

The Old North State Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and the Davidson County Veterans Council host the event, which begins at 11 a.m. The memorial is located at the Interstate 85 rest stop on the southbound side at mile marker 99. The press release states seating will be limited and attendees are welcome to bring their own chair. Anyone who plans to present a wreath to be laid at the memorial is asked to arrive by 10:30 a.m.
