Randolph County Veterans Council remember sacrifices made during 2021 Memorial Day events

Courier-Tribune - 5/27/2021

May 27—Each year Memorial Day commemorates the men and women who died while in the military service and sacrificed for their country. The Randolph County Veterans Council encourages the community to join them in remembering the many veterans who served.

Commander Rob Wilkins believes Memorial Day is a time to thank the people who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for everyone else to have the freedoms they have.

"You might have heard the saying all gave some; some gave all," Wilkins said. "For Memorial Day, that's the first part of that saying all gave some. Some people in the military paid the ultimate sacrifice and gave their lives in service to our country."

The council is an umbrella organization that meets every month to coordinate activities among different veteran organizations. For many years the council has sponsored a Memorial Day ceremony to honor the sacrifice for the country.

Here is a list of events that will take place this year.

On Thursday, May 27, there will be a flag distribution for veteran graves from 5 to 7 p.m. at American Legion Post 45.

Local groups, churches, and residents will adopt a cemetery to put American flags on the graves of veterans buried each year. Flags will be available for participants at the site.

A remembrance at Randolph Memorial Park and Oak Lawn Cemetery will occur on Saturday, May 29, at 9 a.m. Community veterans organizations and volunteers will place flags on the graves of local veterans.

Asheboro will host its Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday starting at 4 p.m. at the Historic Randolph County Courthouse, followed by closing ceremonies at the Randolph County Veterans Memorial.

"Folks who have a military connection, or have a family member who's been in the military, or even especially those who have someone who has served and died in service to our country, see it as a sacred holiday," Wilkins said.
