Veterans, students to ride free on Rockford public transit

Rockford Register Star - 12/21/2021

Dec. 21—ROCKFORD — Veterans and students in grades K-through-12 will be able to ride Rockford Mass Transit District buses free of charge beginning Jan. 3, transit officials announced Monday.

The initiatives are based on feedback received from RMTD riders, stakeholders and employees who took part in the District's Comprehensive Mobility Analysis.

"RMTD is very pleased to partner with the city of Rockford to bring these programs to life," RMTD Executive Director Michael Stubbe said in a news release. "It is always rewarding when you can connect people with resources to help them improve their situation."

The city of Rockford is contributing $24,500 to the Free Rides Programs.

"At the City, we are always looking for ways to reduce barriers for our residents," Mayor Tom McNamara said. "By providing free transportation to our veterans and students, we are giving these individuals more opportunities when it comes to work, education, appointments and play. They will no longer be limited by the cost of bus fare or the distance to their destination."

To obtain an ID card, veterans need to bring a photo ID and proof of their military service to either RMTD Transfer Center. The cost of the ID card is $5 and there is no expiration date for the card.

Students participating in the program need to present a valid area school ID or an RMTD Student photo ID card when boarding a bus. Families whose children's schools do not issue an ID card can obtain an RMTD Student ID card for $2 at either RMTD Transfer Center.
