American Legion members deliver gift baskets to local veterans

Sault Sainte Marie Evening News - 1/5/2022

Jan. 5—SAULT STE. MARIE — Area veterans were reminded this holiday season that they are not forgotten thanks to the American Legion Auxiliary, who delivered 47 Christmas gift baskets to five local assisted living facilities.

On Dec. 18, Freighter View, McKinley Manor, Hearthside, Medilodge, War Memorial Hospital Long Term Care as well as Sault Tribe elder community veterans. Due to heightened COVID-19 restrictions, Bonnie Taylor-Vazquez, auxiliary president, said the group had limited admittance to the facilities for delivery.

"This was our fourth year for this project and each year is as meaningful as the first," said Taylor-Vazquez in an email. "Each of the baskets are filled with various items such as slippers, socks, hats, scarfs, personal care and hygiene products, tissue/tissue holder, puzzle books/reading materials, pens/markers, playing cards, coffee mug, tea and hot chocolate packets and a variety of snack items and sweet treats."

Taylor-Vazquez explained funds for this project came from various fundraisers that the Auxiliary sponsored throughout the year, monetary donations from legionnaires and sons of the American Legion, local businesses, and product donations.

Joy Hill and Abbey Hawker assisted in creating these gift baskets as they have done in previous years. John Leigh and Harold Goetz, legion members, assisted with the deliveries.

"The Auxiliary would like to sincerely thank everyone who supports our efforts for this project and we hope to be able to reach out to more veterans in the years to come," said Taylor-Vazquez via email.

If any individuals, group, or organization would like to assist or donate to this project going forward, contact the American Legion Post 3 in Sault Ste. Marie at 906-632-2881.
