30 affordable housing units for low-income veterans planned for San Bernardino

San Bernardino County Sun - 1/7/2022

Jan. 8—Thirty affordable housing units for low-income veterans are planned for San Bernardino.

The Planning Commission will vote on the project Tuesday, Jan. 11.

Proposed by Los Angeles-based U.S.VETS, a nonprofit that for 24 years has served military veterans and their families through various projects and support programs, the three-story social service housing complex would be built on an undeveloped site at 1351 N. E St.

The vacant 2nd Ward lot is surrounded by houses and mixed commercial and office uses.

Veteran households with incomes below 61% of the average median income for San Bernardino County would qualify for residency. There are one- and two-bedroom units planned, in addition to an office area that would double as a common space.

Residents would have access to myriad services, including case management, crisis interventions, career development, job training, emergency food and clothing, and life skills workshops. Every household would be assigned a case manager.

Prospective tenants will be screened so they are able to sustain themselves and maintain their financial responsibilities through employment, according to a staff report prepared for planning commissioners.

Overnight or temporary housing will not be provided.

The Planning Commission meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday at in the 3rd floor board room at 201 N. E St. in San Bernardino.
