San Bernardino commission OKs affordable housing for low-income veterans

San Bernardino County Sun - 1/12/2022

Jan. 12—An affordable housing complex with 30 units for low-income veterans is bound for San Bernardino after the Planning Commission unanimously approved the project Tuesday, Jan. 11.

Los Angeles-based U.S.VETS, a longtime resource for military veterans and their families, plans to secure funding this year and begin construction in 2023.

The three-story facility is set for an undeveloped site at 1351 N. E St.

U.S.VETS opened a similar complex at March Air Reserve Base near Moreno Valley in March 2018.

A month later the nonprofit got the go-ahead to build a campus in San Bernardino, but funding challenges and the onset of the coronavirus pandemic ultimately doomed the $8.1 million project planned for 17th Street.

The development approved Tuesday will have fencing, entrance gates and cameras to ensure the site is secure, Kent Trimble, a representative with U.S.VETS, told the Planning Commission.

An onsite manager will handle maintenance issues.

Multiple commissioners called the project "wonderful."

A second San Bernardino location could be brought forward for approval once the E Street complex opens, Trimble said.

Veteran households with incomes below 61% of the average median income for San Bernardino County will qualify for residency. There will be 21 one-bedroom units and nine two-bedroom units, in addition to an office area that will double as a common space.

Residents will have access to social services such as case management, crisis interventions, career development, job training, emergency food and clothing, and life skills workshops. Every household is expected to be assigned a case manager.

Prospective tenants will be screened so they are able to sustain themselves and maintain their financial responsibilities through employment, according to a staff report prepared for Tuesday's meeting.

Overnight or temporary housing will not be provided.
