Man, 39, had sex with 13-year-old girl after telling her he was a 16-year-old teen from Elgin, police say

Chicago Tribune - 5/18/2023

A 39-year-old man accused of telling a 13-year-old girl he was a teenage boy from Elgin to allegedly persuade her to have sex with him has been charged by the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office.

Junsuk Park, of the 300 block of North Charles Avenue, Naperville, was booked into the Winnebago County jail May 12 on four counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse related to encounters he had with a Rockford-area girl after allegedly entering her house through her bedroom window, sheriff’s investigators said.

The victim’s father called sheriff’s police Aug. 1 after finding a man in his daughter’s closet at 4 a.m., reports said.

Before officers arrived, the man reportedly drove off in a Toyota Prius that was registered to Park and had been parked in the family’s driveway.

According to the sheriff’s report, the girl told police she befriended Snapchat user “nighttimesensei,” who told her he was James, a 16-year-old boy from Elgin.

The account has since been deleted, police said.

Sheriff’s investigators, who obtained permission to view the girl’s phone, located conversations with “James” during which he talked about sneaking into the girl’s home and performing sex acts.

Police said Aug. 1 was the second time the man sneaked into the girl’s bedroom.

On Monday, Park posted 10% of the $100,000 bond set by the judge and was directed to have no contact with the girl, her residence or with anyone younger than 18 years old.

He is scheduled to be arraigned June 29.
