Clearfield teacher charged with abusing 6 students

Deseret News - 11/5/2017

CLEARFIELD - A substitute teacher at a Clearfield elementary school has been charged with numerous counts of inappropriately touching students.

Mark Glenton Bedel, 62, of Kaysville, was charged earlier this week in 2nd District Court with eight counts of aggravated sex abuse of a child, a first- degree felony.

Prosecutors say Bedel "touched six male children ranging from 7 to 9 years of age" while acting as a substitute teacher on Sept. 27 at Clearfield's Wasatch Elementary School, 210 Center. Some of the students were touched more than once, the charges state.

At the time of his arrest, police had identified two victims. Parents of two of the children allegedly touched contacted police after school that same day. Bedel was arrested at his Kaysville home.

Bedel began working as a substitute teacher with the Davis School District in March of 2016 but is no longer an employee, said district spokesman Christopher Williams.

In 2006, Bedel took a plea in abeyance to DUI and negligent collision, according to court records.

Bedel is scheduled to make his first court appearance on his new charges on Dec. 6.
